Three wins from three on opening weekend

Three wins from three on opening weekend

Website Administrator23 Apr - 10:48

It was a successful opening to the Leicestershire & Rutland League season for our sides as we claimed three wins from three starts.

Things started well with a road win for the 1s at Kibworth with the returning Harry Bates bagging four wickets while George Gowler and James Naylor also claiming scalps on their Premier League debuts as the hosts were bowled out for 220 with one ball of the 50 overs remaining.

In reply, Greg Willows led the way as he bears down on 5,000 runs for the club, putting on an unbroken 108 with Dave Torr to seal an 8-wicket win with over ten overs in the bank.

The 2s edged a nail-biter with Barkby at Cobalts Mill Lane with Joe Charity and Sean Dudley setting things up for the unlikely duo of Bhurva Tank and Matt Ellis to seal the win in the final over.

Having a rough start to the day with the ball, the bowlers were able to peg the visitors back and restrict them to 190 for 9 from their 45 overs with the evergreen Ellis (2-21), Tom Brotherhood (2-31) and Will Wade (2-41) all taking a brace of wickets each.

Things were not looking good for us as we slipped to 109 for 5 and then 161 for 8 but an unbroken stand of 31 in three overs between Ellis and Tank helped seal a welcome and what seemed at one stage unlikely, 25 points.

Things were a little more routine on pitch two with the 4s sealing an 83 run win over Shepshed 3s thanks to a six-wicket haul from Charlie Marsh as they started well to life in Division Six.

Stephen Loveridge top scored with 45 while Tom Fraser added 40 and Danny Hill an unbeaten 39 as we posted 188 for 6 having been asked to bat first.

Three early strikes put the visitors behind the 8-ball at 25 for 3 and they weren't able to recover as Marsh's second spell saw him rip through the Shepshed batting to help seal the win.

There wasn't an outing for the 3s due to pitch availability at Birstall.
